Squeeeeking in just under the wire with today's post! Sorry, guys - sometimes, life gets in the way of our very best intentions.
I've been seeing Alyssa Ettinger's work all over the place, lately. Her new knitware line seems to have struck a chord with many people, and deservedly so. I was so happy to find her Etsy Shop.
There's a word I'm looking for - not trompe de l'oeil - that means an object that is made to look like it was crafted in another way, like the way the Whitman sampler box looks cross-stitched, or these cups look like they are made of yarn. It's been on the tip of my tongue for days, but I just can't quite seem to remember what it is. So maddening!
You can bet I check the sample sale page about a thousand times a day.
Wow, I have been on a somber kick lately, haven't I? First the little charred craters of Georgi Tushev's work, then Marci Washington (although her pieces do have a vibrancy not captured in the tiny thumbnails), and most recently, that story by Lorrie Moore? Seriously, it's past due time to brighten things up a bit, and what better way to do it than with pretty earrings?
- Prehnite earrings by Bluebird Designs. $24.00. (Bluebird Designs is here on Vox as well - check out the gorgeous pictures of her work!)
- Tangerine earrings by Starry Designs. $13.90.
- Abundances earrings by DorisWorks. $28.00.
The same print is available in green dress form at Art Star Philly, $48.
Designers Heather and Kerry Alice Collins are even willing to make custom pieces from a favorite seed or twig, which is one of the loveliest ideas I have heard in a while. Also, their work is by no means restricted to botanical matter - punk rock emblems and natural sea glass both feature in their designs.
The Collins sisters show their work at craft fairs and art festivals around New England, and they are really lovely people. I believe they are actively involved in open space preservation, so there are good reasons to support them besides their wonderful designs.
When engaged in fieldwork or yardwork, one needs a substantial belt to hold up one’s Carhartts. This belt buckle by bella & twigg is definitely up to the task – the brass screws embedded in resin are totally badass. $20.00
Under less demanding conditions, this silk and rayon obijime by Marissa Joanna Rojas is a unique and understated choice. Originally intended to serve as a decorative tie for an obi, the flat braided cord would be very pretty wrapped twice through the belt loops of a pair of slacks. (Marissa is also on Livejournal!) $18.00
This ribbon-tied fabric belt by Zabelou is purely ornamental. Screenprinted with unusual patterns – other choices include montgolfier balloons and dinosaur bones – these pieces would look fantastic slung low over a tunic dress or pair of jeans. (Ici, il y a les news de Zabelou!) $38.00
